I Fear My Pain Interests You by Stephanie LaCava
I go through lulls when it comes to reading. There will be weeks where I’ll attack books as if my life is on the line and then long stretches where I can’t motivate myself to read a single page. I’ve been excited about this one from LaCava for a while, which describes itself as an “absurdist novel about fame, culture and connections, bodies and breakdowns.” It’s a quick read and short novel that centers around a woman with famous parents that has to leave New York after a bad breakup … or whatever it is that she was in. There’s minimal plot, and instead, it focuses on the protagonist’s desires and anxieties. It’s very well-written and quite bleak. Every guy in this book is terrible. I really enjoyed finally getting to read it. -G
All I do on TikTok is watch people talk about fashion, which makes me want clothes I can’t afford. But it’s also fun. Clothesarefriends is a sweet follow for anyone who wants to watch someone who sees clothes as art and has the appropriate amount of reverence for them. The woman behind the account isn’t married to designer brands but also buys faux fur coats in Florida just because she loves the aesthetic. Personally, I love the enthusiasm and the chaos. -K
Women Talking directed by Sarah Polley
Women Talking is just that, a movie based on a popular novel about a group of women talking. It’s a bit of a chamber piece but masterfully directed by Sarah Polley with phenomenal acting from Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy, among many others. The story centers on women in an isolated religious colony (cult) trying to figure out what to do after a rash of sexual assaults. It’s dense material with a semi-hopeful undertone and feels like a real discussion instead of actors theatrically yelling at one another. Our theater was remarkably quiet, especially for the last hour, with the audience waiting for the back-and-forths with bated breath. It comes out in early December and is definitely worth checking out. -G
Laverne Cox’s Studio Apartment tour
Laverne Cox’s studio apartment is basically the size of my studio apartment, but that is where the similarities end. Her’s is minimalist by design, gorgeous, and tranquil. Mine is minimalist because I can’t decide on a couch. -K
“If It Makes You Happy” covered by Phoebe Bridgers
I mean … of course. -G
“In the Morning” by The Ballroom Thieves
A song for you. -K
