Week 204
It's me. Hi. I'm the problem. It's me.
Go Wizards.
-Kathrine & Greg
She can’t miss. Taylor Swift put out a new album (again) and I’m a big, big fan. This is coming from a biased source, but Midnights really hits when it hits. A collage of Folklore/Evermore lyricism with 1989/Reputation sonic sound, Midnights is worth a listen and fun as hell. On just one full listen—and some erratic jumping around—there’s a bit of a lull for me in the middle but it starts and ends as strong as an album can. This can certainly change, but “Lavender Haze,” “Anti-Hero” and “Sweet Nothing” are probably my favorites at the moment with a special shoutout to the last four songs sending the album out on a high. I’m enjoying the chaos of the extra seven songs, and I’m sure I’ll report back with a more in-depth breakdown sooner rather than later. -G
“Vigilante Shit” by Taylor Swift
“I don’t dress for women. I don’t dress for men. Lately, I’ve been dressing for revenge.” This song. I’m screaming. -K
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
I have a few chapters left, but I can already say that I love this book, and I’m going to miss it when it’s done. It centers on two friends building video games, but it’s also an emotionally-exhausting bildungsroman that has hints of A Little Life with a real sense of humor and lightness. I tried it out on the recommendation of Hunter Harris, and she nailed it with this one. It’s remarkably well-written and balances so many different ideas and subplots effortlessly. It’s long, but a very quick read, as you need to know what happens once you start. -G
How Should A Business Bro Dress? By Guy Trebay
A think piece on the fashion choices of finance bros. It’s concerning that hundreds (thousands?) of people who work for financial institutions wear the exact same outfit. It’s almost like Goldman Sacs thrives on stamping out individualism. Aside from the depressing reality this article highlights (almost everyone interviewed for this article told the reporter that they weren’t allowed to talk to the press), the photos kill me. -K
“The Loneliest Time” by Carly Rae Jepsen
I haven’t had a chance to listen to the entire album yet (Taylor’s fault), but this song is great. Will check out the rest when I stop listening to Midnights in a few years. -G
I’m not one to rewatch Disney movies from my childhood as a general rule. But Disney Halloween movies just hit different. This week I’ll be watching Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, Halloweentown II, Halloweentown High, and, quite probably, Twitches. Spooky Halloween. -K
